The Gospel According to Matthew
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.
Mt. 9.9
The Adult Christian Education class has begun an in-depth study of Matthew's gospel, based upon a study prepared by our Canon to the Bishop, Andrew Doyle. We will examine the text in detail, investigating the sources Matthew used to write his gospel, comparing texts in Matthew with versions found in Luke, Mark, John, and elsewhere, and discussing what modern scholarship has to say about it all. We will seek to discover who Matthew was, where he came from, what his world was like, what it was he heard in the stories of Jesus, what he was concerned with passing on to his readers - what was the gospel as Matthew heard it? And finally, how can Matthew's perspective help us to hear Jesus' gospel; how can it nourish our faith, nurture our growth?
